Sausages

Barbecuing is very big here.  There's lots of good sources of meat, all grown in Australia.  Lamb abounds, but a traditional item to throw on the barbie is sausage.

Sausage here comes in all types.  There are veal sausages, pork, beef, and a combination of all.  You can find kangaroo or crocodile sausage if you care to look for those, and of course they're chicken and emu sausage, and even vegetarian sausage.

The Australian word for sausage is snag, so if an Aussie is throwing snags on the barbie, now you know what they're up to

Sausages from sausage sizzles always taste best.

Every weekend outside grocery stores, charities host "sausage sizzles."  They have a huge barbecue, and dozens of sausages sizzling away that you can buy, wrapped in a piece of white bread (hot dog buns don't exist), with tomato sauce, mustard, or more traditionally, really sweet barbecue sauce.   My kids like grocery shopping with me on weekends, because if they whine enough, I give them $3 for a sausage.  Doesn't matter if they ate lunch right before we go, they are staaarrrvvving by the time we get to the store.

Tonight we made sausages at home.  Usually I buy the kosher ones, but these were steak sausages from the butcher, with ground raw meat inside.  We don't have a barbecue, so I used a grill pan, and there was so much oil coming off them and smoking as they grilled that I set off the smoke alarm.  Kids were beyond happy.
